Here at MU we’ve had the chance to work with over 42,413 musicians over the past 15+ years.
And it has provided an endless stream of proof for something we’ve always held to be true:
Different backgrounds…
Different dreams…
Different experiences along the way…
Not to mention different instruments…
Musical styles…
Ability levels…
Ages…
And more.

It might be the 17-year old rock guitarist, dreaming of writing original songs with a band… and then shredding face-melting improvised solos from stage in front of thousands.

Or the 63-year old classical pianist who wishes they could finally get their fingers around that Chopin (for a recital they’ve been planning in their head for more than a decade…)

Or maybe even the busy 44-year-old mom of three, who just wishes she could bring her fiddle along to the local bluegrass jam every Friday… and play the music she’s always loved, purely for the joy of it.
There’s no end to the variety of musicians who find their way to us.
And despite all those apparent differences…
Two things are ALWAYS true about them:
#1: They LOVE music.
So much that they manage to remain determined and devoted to their musical journey, even when life tries its hardest to get in the way.
#2: What they want, above all else, is musical freedom.
To be able to just play whatever they want, wherever they want, with whoever they want, in front of anybody…
And have it sound, and feel, amazing.
Sadly, in most cases, their dreams remain just that: dreams.
Day after day, week after week, month after month.
The years start stacking up…
With little real progress towards the thing that inspired them to pick up and play in the first place.
I’m guessing you can probably relate.
Because here’s the thing:
These days more than ever, there’s no shortage of information available.
And there’s even a wealth of great instruction for “how to get better at your instrument”.
But what’s actually pretty weird is this:
If you look back over your musical journey so far…
Has anyone really helped you actually DO the thing you’ve been dreaming of?
You want to jam…
Has anyone helped you work on jamming?
You want to perform…
Has anyone helped you work on performance?
You want to create your own music…
Has anyone helped you with musical creation?
It’s no wonder that despite diligently working hard at your music practice, you might
not really feel all that much closer to the dream that once inspired you.
You might even have started to doubt the journey entirely.
Like:
“Even if I did master my instrument, I still wouldn’t feel comfortable stepping out on stage, or sharing my music with others…”
If you’ve found yourself thinking thoughts like that, you’re not alone.
And although it might be something you chalk up to “not having natural talent” or lacking enough confidence or belief in yourself…
The truth is:
You’ve been left to struggle away without any bridge over the massive gap between where you are, and where you dream of being.
And let’s face it:
Nobody wants to step out on stage, share their music with others, or try to jump in and jam with people if they think they’ll be met with disdain, disappointment or disgust.
It’s a bit like you’re being told “you must be this tall to ride this ride”...
But day after day, you don’t seem to be getting any taller…
And how would you even know if you are ever, finally, tall enough?

Until you have the bridge you need, you can work hard at music practice all day long, and never get any closer to your destination.
But with the right bridge…
Even the musical skills you already have can quickly prove to be more than enough.
And what once seemed like a pie-in-the-sky daydream…
Can suddenly feel (and be) absolutely possible for you.
So what is that “bridge” you need?
Let me introduce you to two hypothetical (but all too realistic) musicians named Susie and Bob...

SUSIE is like 95% of music learners out there.
She has been learning music for a while, diligently putting in the time.
But pretty much everything she’s been practicing can be described as “how to play the instrument”.
Now if you’re like Susie yourself, you might be thinking “Well, duh, isn’t that what learning music is all about?”
Well, that’s a bit like saying that learning to drive just means knowing how to turn the steering wheel and press the pedals.
Or learning to be an artist means being able to accurately reproduce your own exact replicas of the great paintings of the past.
Is it important to develop the physical skills?
Absolutely.
But no matter how much Susie works away…
She finds she still can’t play very expressively…
She’s nervous to perform or play with others…
And she can’t create her own music. Only things that are written down or she’s pre-learned note-by-note.
She always thought that as she got better on her instrument, she’d move closer and closer to that “musical freedom” she originally dreamed of.
But that just doesn’t seem to be happening.
At all.
Not Like Bob!
BOB has already discovered what Susie is only beginning to wonder about.
He’s found out that becoming a true “musician”, and having that “musical freedom” is going to take a lot more than just instrument skills.
Bob lucked out, and found his way beyond just “music learning”... into musicality training.
He understands he’ll need to develop not just his “hands”, but his “hearing”, “head”, and even his “heart”.

So Bob doesn’t just practice his instrument skills.
He’s been learning interval recognition, and solfa, and active listening…
And he can do some really cool stuff now!
He can play songs and pieces by ear…
He can improvise…
He can write his own music…
In fact, Bob is a whole lot closer to that “musical freedom” than he ever thought would be possible…
“Hooray for Bob!”, you might be thinking.
Well, kind of.
See, Bob is pretty proud of what he’s now able to do. And rightly so!
But…
When he throws on a track, he still struggles to jam along.
He’s nervous to share any of the music he’s written.
And he’s way too scared to step out and perform, or even collaborate
with the other musicians in his area.
Why?
It’s because the raw skills aren’t enough.
You need a bridge.

A bridge from the raw skills to actually DOING the thing.
This might sound painfully obvious, but…
→ If you want to jam freely, you need to practice jamming!
→ If you want to be an amazing performer, you need to practice performing!
→ If you want to improvise or write your own phenomenal music… well, you need to practice doing exactly that.
Right now you might relate more to Susie or to Bob.
Either way, you can probably sense it deep down:
What you’ve been practicing up until now might produce some improvement over time…
But continuing with that alone can never bridge that gap.
You might master your instrument…
… and still be too nervous to let even your cat hear you perform.
You might study songwriting or improvisation for years…
… and still feel deeply limited, creatively, like you’re just regurgitating the same ideas again and again.
You might work on your ear skills until you can recognise every note in a Cmaj 9 ♯11 chord instantly…
… and still be terrified you’ll blunder and embarrass yourself if you try jamming with other musicians.
The reality is that you’ll never feel truly free to create, jam or perform, until you bridge the gap to actually DOING it.
So how do you build that bridge?
Because you’ve probably heard the advice:
“Just jump in and do it!"
"Don’t be scared!"
"Fake it til you make it!”
And in an ideal world, that would be good advice.
But anyone who’s tried that…
Or even just imagined themselves trying it…
Can tell you:
That’s a damn scary (and seriously risky) route to take. At least, for anyone who doesn’t have skin made of iron.
Fortunately, there’s a better, safer, and genuinely enjoyable way to build that bridge, brick by brick…
To understand how to build the bridge, there are two big things you need to know:
#1: Every musician has a unique “Musical Core”.
Once you know yours, everything in music becomes easier (or even unnecessary).
#2: There is a missing “bridge” between everything you’ve learned up ‘til now, and being able to actually DO the things you’ve dreamed of.
And, by the way, let’s be clear up front:
Even Musical U’s own flagship membership (which has produced success story after success story) was actually missing this vital bridge!
… until now.
Your Musical Core
Over the years, working with tens of thousands of musicians of all shapes and sizes, we discovered something fascinating…
The common factor across all their musical hopes and dreams was this idea of “musical freedom”.
Something we came to define as becoming “The Complete Musician”:

The “Complete Musician”
... is one who can step into any musical situation with confidence, and play something that sounds, and feels, great.
Every musician had their own, often very specific, musical dream.
But almost without exception, they agreed that becoming that kind of “Complete Musician” summed it up well.
Now here’s where it gets really interesting…
Because when we looked at the vast and varied range of musical dreams shared with us…
Even though each one was unique…
There were actually three clear “archetypes” we saw:

The "Creative" loves to conjure up their own musical ideas.
They focus on expressing their own, personal creativity, whether that's on-the-fly with improvisation, or through activities like songwriting, composing or arranging.

The "Jammer" loves to just dive in and figure it out.
They focus on developing their in-the-moment instinctive ability to express music that fits, and would probably rather try something new than refine something they've learned already.

The "Performer" loves playing music they've prepared in advance.
They focus on gradually building up a repertoire of pieces or songs they can perform well, and improving the reliability, accuracy, and musical expression of their performances.
As you read those descriptions, you probably found yourself nodding along with one in particular, thinking “Yep! That’s me!”
(or maybe more than one resonated… take a peek at the lilac box)
These are a little bit like personality types. They don’t fully describe the uniqueness of you, but they provide a helpful shorthand for understanding yourself better.
As we shared this idea of the three “Musical Cores” with our members, they were often struck by how liberating it was.
Immediately, they could see that if they’re a prototypical “Jammer”... then it’s okay that they’re never all that excited about endless grinding away to master each and every note from the sheet music.
Or if they’re a “Creative” then it’s absolutely fine if they never want to perform in front of anyone.
And the “Performers” could give themselves permission to focus fully on mastering their repertoire and levelling up their expressiveness.
In a world of information-overload and endless avenues to explore, it’s all too easy to wind up feeling like you “should” be doing everything.
Simply knowing your Musical Core can bring instant clarity and focus.
Want to take it a level deeper?
While most members did feel a strong connection to one of the three Cores in particular, many actually said something more like “Well, I’m mostly a Jammer, but I do enjoy some Creative activities” or “I’ve always been a Performer, but really what I’ve always wanted to do was be a Jammer”.
So although these three archetypes are helpful…
And in some cases recognising which one you are is all you need…
Your Musical Core can actually be thought of as a unique combination of all three.
It can also shift and develop over time, as you choose to focus your attention on each Core.
So what does all this have to do with building that “bridge”?
Well, you might already be starting to see it…
The definitions of these Cores aren’t about nitty-gritty specific skills you need.
It’s about what you’re doing in your musical life.
The bridge you need, from here to your own musical dream, is built with Creative, Jammer, and Peformer “bricks”.
Once we saw this, we realised the bridge wasn’t just missing in musicians’ lives…
It was missing at Musical U.
We had our flagship membership which covered all the raw skills in depth…
And we had our Next Level coaching program, where musicians could get daily one-to-one help from an expert coach to guide them in building that bridge, brick by brick.
But in between… there was a big gap.
How could the average Musical U member, who’d been working on those raw skills of musicality…
Actually build their bridge to expressing their Musical Core…
And make their musical dream a reality…
Without having to suffer through that painful “just do it, fake it til you make it” pressure and risk?
Once we saw the gap, we knew we had to do something about it.
And that’s why we created something entirely new…
Introducing...
Accelerator Membership
For the devoted musician who wants an easy, fun, and fully-supported way to build their bridge
to Jamming, Performing, and Creating.

Our aim when creating Accelerator membership was simple.
We’ve already got a vast training library of DIY materials for gaining all the “raw skills” needed to jam, perform, and create.
But we know there’s a gap between gaining those skills, and getting out there and doing it.
So what if…
You could simply show up, once a week, and get guided help.
“Putting in the reps”, week after week.
So that you don’t need to wonder if you’re good enough, or if you’re ready to share your own music, perform for others, or jump in and jam with other musicians…
You know.
Because you’ve already been doing it, week after week.
That’s exactly what we’ve been providing, for months now, inside a “beta” version of Accelerator membership.

The best thing about Accelerator is the fact that we are really jamming, performing, creating.”
— Marie P., Pianist
Weekly Creative Workshops

Whatever level you’ve reached with the “raw skills” (like recognising notes and chords by ear, or writing lyrics, or arranging) you get to come along, get some fresh instruction, and practice creating, right there on the spot.
Here are just a few examples of what’s been shared in recent Creative Workshops…

Getting feedback from peers and staff around specific things I'm trying out creatively motivates me to continue.”
— Dominique A., Singer
Weekly Jammer Workshops

In our Jammer Workshops, we break down what exactly it takes to “jump in and jam”.
No matter what your preferred style or ability level may be, the truth is that there’s always a way to join in, musically. With a weekly opportunity to give it a try, free of pressure or judgement, you can rapidly gain both the ability and the confidence to jam with other musicians, any time you want.
Here are just a few examples of what’s been shared in recent Jammer Workshops…

I feel like the music makes more sense than before. I notice more details.”
— Marie P., Pianist
Weekly Performer Workshops

A central part of how we teach performance skills at Musical U is the idea of a “Performance Pathway”: a route from only playing music alone, in your practice room, right through to stages and audiences of any size you desire.
In weekly Performer Workshops, you have the opportunity to perform live, for a small, friendly, encouraging group of fellow musicians, all on their own journey of levelling up their performance—and get expert feedback and guidance on how you can improve.
And if even that sounds intimidating for now, you can also share pre-recorded performances as a stepping stone, and get the same support, feedback, and encouragement. You get to move steadily, easily, enjoyably along your own “performance pathway”, week by week.
Here are just a few examples of what’s been shared in recent Performer Workshops…

I’m feeling better playing and singing.”
— Cathy L., Singer
What Could Accelerator Membership Do For You?
Depending on your own unique Musical Core, the chances are that some combination of the workshops described above got you at least a little bit excited…
Imagine being about to “put in the reps” in a safe, friendly, guided way, that practically guarantees you improve, week after week, at actually doing the thing you’ve always dreamed of…
If you could relate to Bob earlier…
Meaning you’ve already been working on developing your holistic musicality,
perhaps even with us at Musical U…
Then this was made for you.
And you do not need to master all those “raw skills” before diving in.
In fact, the sooner the better.
So if you could relate more to Susie…
Meaning that up until now, you’ve been almost exclusively thinking
about “practicing your instrument”, improving your technique and learning new repertoire…
Then this will be the fastest way to get where you actually want to go.
And because Accelerator membership includes everything in our regular membership program…
Meaning all our courses and training modules, and the entire Living Music program…
You’ll be able to level up those raw skills at the same time, with expert guidance on what exactly will assist you most in developing your Musical Core.
(Note: If you relate to Susie and you’re not yet ready to move forwards fast, then starting out with our regular membership might be the way to go. And when you start really seeing how that missing bridge is holding you back, we’ll be glad to welcome you into Accelerator.)

Great musicality training is universal from one genre to another. Musical skills are musical skills and sometimes coming at it from a different angle can make the lightbulb turn on”
— Patti Sue R., Singer

I’ve had lots of wins since joining Accelerator membership.”
— Tony P., Pianist

Since joining Accelerator, I have performed for people outside my household for the first time, I have written one or two new songs, and have tried writing a different genre.”
— Dominique A., Singer

Christopher Sutton
Founder and Director, Musical U
Hey, hey! Christopher here.
And I am so excited that you’ve checked out this page.
Because it shows you’re a passionate, devoted musician. Eager for more, and open-minded about what it’s going to take to make your musical dreams a reality.
I’ve been running Musical U for over 15 years now, and I do it because even to this day, it breaks my heart to think of all the people out there slaving away without the right musicality training to help them actually become the musician they know deep down they were destined to be.
But you know what pains me even more?
Knowing how many are still struggling even though they’re putting in the legwork!
Working away in isolation…
Putting in the practice to develop the raw skills…
…and still not being able to get out there and DO the thing they’ve been dreaming of.
If anything here on this page resonated with you, then please don’t let another day go by without taking action to “build that bridge”.
We want to put Accelerator membership within reach of any devoted musician.
So despite the VAST amount of valuable training packed in, we’ve priced it at just $997/year or $97/month.
Which is, frankly, an absolute bargain, considering everything it will unlock for you in your musical life.
But while we’re still in this early pre-launch “beta” phase…
Not only will you get to enjoy smaller, more intimate Weekly Workshops, with more opportunities for personal feedback and guidance.
To help encourage you to go ahead and take action today…
I’m also including the three bonuses listed above, valued at over $3,000, to accelerate your success even faster and easier.
So with your pick of monthly or annual, and our Total Confidence guarantee protecting you fully…
There’s absolutely nothing to lose—and everything to gain.

Or...
Will you honour your Musical Core, and take action today to start building that bridge?
We’re excited to take you by the hand and help you do it.
Brick by brick, week by week…

Accelerator membership provides live weekly group Workshops, focused on developing your Jammer, Creative and Performer “Core”.
As a bonus included in this special offer you’ll have access to all three Cores, and can attend one or more of the three Workshops each and every week.
These Workshops are a friendly and supportive environment where you’ll receive on-the-spot guidance on how to practice and improve, as a Performer, Jammer, or Creative musician.
Naturally, all our methodology is fully compatible and designed as part of a holistic approach. So whether you choose to focus in on a single Core, or explore all three, you’ll find yourself thriving as the unique musician you are and wish to become.
As a bonus you will also get access to the replay recordings of every Workshop conducted so far, giving you instant access to 60+ Workshops from the start.
We also have some exciting additional features in the works for Accelerator membership—but we’re keeping those under wraps for now!
In this special offer you will also receive, as a bonus, FREE access to the three 4-week “Bootcamps” we’ll be running in the months ahead, including lifetime access to the replays afterwards.
Accelerator membership is a level above our regular “Musical U” membership.
So it also provides access everything in that membership program, including:
You’ll have access to ALL of this with your Accelerator membership!
And right now you can save up to 50% on the regular pricing PLUS receive the valuable bonuses mentioned above.
Whenever we do something new at Musical U, we work with our members to make sure it’s the best it can be.
Accelerator membership has been running for several months already, providing amazing results for a range of musicians already.
But because we are still putting the finishing touches on the new Musical U platform, and have a few more awesome features in the works for Accelerator membership, we aren’t “officially” opening the doors just yet.
So we’re calling this a “beta” version of the membership to acknowledge there are still some parts in development.
For your experience in Accelerator membership though, you can consider it fully ready for you to dive in and start thriving!
Our instructors all have extensive experience across a range of instruments and styles.
But even if they didn’t, the truth is that musicality is universal.
While it’s true that specifics vary across styles and instruments, the core skills you need and the way of practicing Jamming, Creativity and Performance are so central to music itself, our training material and Accelerator Workshops apply across all instruments and styles.
This is why a musician with great musicality can easily pick up a new instrument and quickly attain a great level of ability—because the instrument specifics are really only a small part of true, holistic musicality.
We already have Accelerator members succeeding across a wide variety of instruments and styles, proving that this unified approach works well. (Not to mention 15+ years of prior experience providing the world’s leading musicality training using this approach!)
So you can be confident that no matter your preferred style(s) or instrument(s), Accelerator membership will serve you well.
We do encourage live attendance wherever possible, as it gives you the chance to connect with our team and other members, and receive on-the-spot guidance.
We vary the weekly call times to help accommodate a wide range of schedules and timezones and increase the odds that you can attend regularly.
However, all Workshops will be available to you to watch on-demand afterwards, and the Accelerator team are active in the corresponding Discussion Boards to answer any questions or provide any help you might need.
No problem.
If you can’t bring your instrument, or aren’t able to play (e.g. due to temporary injury or noise considerations), you’ll still be able to benefit, and we still encourage attendance.
It is ideal if you can have an instrument to hand in most cases, but depending on the topic and your way of participating, you can always learn a lot during the session to apply on your instrument later.
No, there is never any pressure to participate live, it’s entirely optional to speak up or play something for the group.
With that being said, we are confident that after attending some of these friendly and supportive Workshops, you will feel ready and eager to take part.
It’s never too soon to start musicality training :)
Our rule of thumb has always been that it’s normally good to have been learning your instrument for a few months, to be able to get full benefit from Musical U’s material.
But if you want to dive in fully from the outset, or you’ve already got at least a few months under your belt, then Accelerator membership is the best option.
There is a lot you can learn with just our DIY material inside regular membership, but you will learn faster and more easily if you’re also able to take advantage of the Accelerator Workshops.
This current special offer is designed exclusively for existing members.
Simply purchase Accelerator membership using the same email you use to log into Musical U, and we will automatically stop your existing membership subscription.
We want to make sure this is an amazing deal, no matter your existing membership situation, so if:
… then please drop an email to support@musical-u.com and we’ll be happy to help!
There is no long-term commitment with Accelerator membership.
You can cancel at any time and not be charged again.
You are also protected by our Total Confidence Guarantee (see above for details).
Should you wish to return to regular membership when you cancel, you can simply purchase a new regular membership plan using the same email account.
Your member profile and training progress will be kept intact, but you will lose access to the weekly Accelerator Workshops, past Workshop recordings, and any other features specific to Accelerator membership.

"Musical U has helped me get unstuck in my musical journey!"
"While I have studied theory in the past, Musical U has allowed me to really understand theory with my ears and apply it to my instrument. The Musical U team make thoughtful responses to my comments and have checked in with me when I hadn't been on the site for awhile. Other music related websites haven't done that. I enjoy using Musical U and have noticed growth in my playing and knowledge since I started in December."

"I'm grateful to be a member of Musical U!"
"I am thrilled with what I'm learning: a musical mindset, improv, playing by ear, a sharpened ear for music, and a thoroughly revitalized daily practice. In addition to all the wonderful teachers, I've been impressed by Pros who meet with us monthly, staff who are available around the clock to answer questions, and a Musical U student community who are both fun and supportive. I'm grateful to be a member of Musical U!"

"Highly recommend Musical U, you won’t be disappointed!"
"I just started and within a week I’m already hearing things in music that I never noticed before. This will help both my own enjoyment of music and improve my own playing. There’s so much content and at the same time it’s fun to learn in a different way. Highly recommend Musical U, you won’t be disappointed."

"I highly recommend MU!"
"I was fortunate to find Musical U on the internet while searching for online resources for studying music theory. I am currently enrolled in the course. The material is thorough and well presented. I particularly appreciate the quick response to questions. I am sure that I will continue to take other courses offered by Musical U on the future. I highly recommend MU."
